Do We Place Our Trust in Jesus?

21st week Thursday in Ordinary Time

Year One

1 Thess 3:7-13

For this reason, brothers and sisters,[a] during all our distress and persecution we have been encouraged about you through your faith.  For we now live, if you continue to stand firm in the Lord.  How can we thank God enough for you in return for all the joy that we feel before our God because of you? 1Night and day we pray most earnestly that we may see you face to face and restore whatever is lacking in your faith. Now may our God and Father himself and our Lord Jesus direct our way to you.  And may the Lord make you increase and abound in love for one another and for all, just as we abound in love for you.  And may he so strengthen your hearts in holiness that you may be blameless before our God and Father at the coming of our Lord Jesus with all his saints. (1 Thess 3:7-13).

Christians are called to holiness. A life of holiness is present in a human community which is broken. Broken individuals living together in the name of Jesus draw strength from Jesus to live  holy. What is humanly impossible to be holy in the sight of God is made possible by the grace of God. We make an effort to be holy and walk in the way of the Lord, and the Lord gives his grace to sanctify us. It is possible to be holy and live in the grace of God.  We need to be aware of our weakness and constantly acknowledge the grace and presence of God to be our aid to be holy. Let us submit to the Lord of mercy and goodness, who will make us holy and happy. The life of holiness is contagious, and so it makes us all who are living with us to walk on the path of holiness.

Do you believe the life of holiness is possible?

Year Two

1 Cor 1:1-9

Jesus has come to enrich us in every way.  By the birth, passion, death and resurrection of Jesus, we are saved.   We are made guiltless before him.  It is not our merit, but God’s love and grace that come to prove that he is a faithful God.   Yet times we may be unfaithful due to our weakness and fragility, but God is always faithful.   His faithfulness is manifested by sending his own to save us, even the cost of his Son, Jesus. God is faithful; let us place our trust in him.

Do we place our trust in Jesus?

 Mt 24:42-51

“Who then is the faithful and wise slave, whom his master has put in charge of his household, to give the other slaves their allowance of food at the proper time? (Mt 24:45).

Jesus states in the gospel that a faithful and wise slave is the one who does his duty faithfully. It is gift to be a faithful servant.  Today, most people think that the fastest way to be successful and progress in life is through unfaithfulness. Thus, unfaithfulness is promoted for the ‘advancement of life.’ It is a known fact that unfaithfulness will not produce good results in the long run.   The world tends to reward the unfaithful and unlawful and punish the faithful.  But Jesus is speaking about a faithful servant whom he rewards for their goodness.  It is a choice one has to make to be a faithful servant or an unfaithful servant.  The results depend upon the choice you make.

Do I wish to be a faithful servant or an unfaithful servant?
