Know that the Lord is Sovereign!
20th week Time Monday in Ordinary
Year One
Judge 2:11-19
Meditation
The passage
outlines a tragic and repeated cycle in Israel's history during the time of the
Judges. After the death of Joshua and his generation, the Israelites begin to
do evil in the eyes of the Lord, worshiping the Baals and turning away from the
God who brought them out of Egypt. In response, God allows them to be oppressed
by surrounding nations. Yet, in His mercy, He raises up judges to deliver them.
But even then, the people do not fully listen, quickly returning to corruption
after each judge dies. It becomes a cycle of sin, oppression, deliverance, and
relapse.
What
practices help us remember and remain grounded in God’s truth?
Two
Ezek 24:15-24
Know that the Lord is Sovereign!
The Lord tells Ezekial that he
will take away the delight from his sight. He would give times of trouble and
hardships for the people of Israel. His own wife would die, and many others
would be put to death. We do not keep God in mind in the time of delight. The
Lord would send turbulent times then we think of him and call on him for help.
The Lord tells Ezekiel not to
mourn or weep and show any sign of honour for the dead. He tells him to keep
your turbans on your head and your sandals on your feet. Then the people will
know that the Lord is Sovereign. Yet we must recognize the reality of troubles
and trust in the Lord. Lord will come to our aid.
What do we do in times of
trouble?
Mt 19:16-22
A
rich young man approaches Jesus and asks, “Teacher, what good thing must I do
to get eternal life?” Jesus first tells him to keep the commandments, and the
man replies that he has done so. Then Jesus adds, “If you want to be perfect,
go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in
heaven. Then come, follow me.” When the young man hears this, he goes away sad
because he had great wealth.
The
young man wanted to know what good thing he could do to earn eternal life. He
approached salvation as something to be achieved by human effort or moral
checklist. The young man claimed to have kept the commandments, but Jesus
revealed that his heart was still attached to his possessions. His obedience
was outward, but not inwardly surrendered.
Are
we obedient to God’s laws?
