Jonah Goes to Nineveh

Jon 3:1-10
Jonah Goes to Nineveh
Meditation
Jonah after his own conversion
went to the city of Nineveh to preach the conversion for the people. The king
and people paid heed to Jonah and all of them including animals took up the
fast. Taking up the common fast as a nation and universe is something
noteworthy. It is necessary every time to declare a common fast and to
practice it and to do reparation for the sins of humanity.
God was very much pleased with
the fast that was followed by the nation as a whole and his anger has come
down. He did not punish the people of Nineveh but blessed them. The way to come
back to God is the way of a change of heart and preparation and making
things right with God and with one another. God loves those who want to make
peace with others and with himself. The only way that is open for our salvation
is to set things right with God and others. Lent is the time to set the right
things for a good spiritual life.
Do we know the power of people
who seek to live right?
Gospel: Lk 11:29-32
When the crowds were increasing, he began to
say, "This generation is an evil generation; it asks for a sign, but no
sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah. For just as Jonah became a sign to the people
of Nineveh, so the Son of Man will be to this generation. The queen of the
South will rise at the judgment with the people of this generation and condemn
them because she came from the ends of the earth to listen to the wisdom of
Solomon and see something greater than Solomon is here! The people of Nineveh
will rise at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, because they
repented at the proclamation of Jonah, and see, something greater than Jonah is
here! (Lk 11:29-32).
Son of Man is the sign for the
generation of that time, generations that have gone by and generations to come.
Jesus is the Alpha and Omega. He is the beginning and end. He is for all and
for all ages, times and seasons. In Jesus, we have the fullness of Truth.
God has manifested Himself in the person of Jesus.
In every age people look for new signs. As
believers, we have to keep in mind that Jesus is the sign par excellence. Jesus
is the Salvation for us. Let us approach him in faith and love.
Do I consider Jesus as the Sign
of Salvation?
